Understanding Customer Prices

We're committed to providing safe, reliable power at the lowest price possible to the customers and communities we serve.

Bill basics

Your monthly bill covers your energy use and supports the crews, daily maintenance and equipment upgrades that keep your power more reliable.

How energy prices are determined

PGE sets prices based on several factors, including fuel and power purchasing costs, operating expenses, crews, maintenance, regulatory requirements and the generation, buying and delivery of power to homes and businesses. We also collect mandatory tariffs, state-mandated fees and pass-through costs.

Your dollars at work

Making sure your power is safe and reliable includes projects like putting powerlines underground, making improvements for wildfire safety, getting ready for extreme weather, and using new technology to reduce outages and restore power faster. Our investors help by providing the money needed for these projects, so we can spread out the costs over time. Visit our video gallery to watch your dollars at work and learn more.

Other factors that can impact customer prices

For over a hundred years we’ve been investing in the needs of the communities we serve. As a major employer, infrastructure operator, taxpayer and community partner, our roles and responsibilities go far beyond energy supply to supporting and investing in our community.

Our commitment to managing costs

We're making sure we're getting the most out of the energy resources and system we already have and investing in more efficient technology and equipment. We’re also accessing available awards and grants and incentivizing customers to participate in energy shifting programs.

  • Integrated resource and system planning: The right mix of energy resources in the right locations can lower energy costs for our communities. This includes generation, transmission and distribution systems. Transmission lines connect power generation facilities to the distribution system, where energy is distributed to customers. Our resource and system planning informs how to best meet the future energy needs in our service area in the most cost-effective ways.

  • Helping to ensure growth pays for growth: PGE is proud to support Oregon’s POWER Act (HB 3546), the legislation that ensures new growth pays for new growth, and we continue to work with regulators to ensure that new large load customers pay their share for renewable resources, transmission lines, substations and other infrastructure that is added to the grid, while all customers benefit from those investments.

  • Maximizing federal grants and tax credits: To keep costs as low as possible for our customers, we are maximizing federal grants and tax credits — securing approximately $252 million in grants and capturing more than $1 billion in production and investment tax credits from our own clean energy portfolio, and we estimate as much as another $1 billion from third-party energy contracts. These financial benefits are passed on to customers when the credits are realized.
