How We Prepare for Winter

Your safety is our top priority

Here are some ways we work year-round to deliver reliable power and minimize the impact of weather-related outages during the winter season.

Equipment maintenance and upgrades

We're replacing aging poles and wires, installing underground power lines and insulating overhead lines in areas prone to damage. This increases reliability and safety during extreme weather conditions.

Tree and plant management

We conduct year-round tree trimming and vegetation management for over 2.2 million trees and approximately 12,000 miles of power lines.

Smart Grid technology

We have installed early fault detection devices that alert us before equipment problems occur. This helps improve reliability and minimize outage time. We've also added hundreds of devices called "reclosures" that automatically turn off power lines during an emergency to prevent damage and keep customers safe.

Remote safety monitoring

We use panoramic AI fire detection cameras for 24/7 real-time monitoring, allowing us to track safety conditions year-round, regardless of the season or weather.

Daily weather tracking

Our team of meteorologists and our network of weather stations provide us with daily detailed weather updates, which we share with the public. This information helps us plan and prepare for severe weather.

Community coordination

We collaborate closely with local, state and federal agencies, as well as Tribes, to plan for emergencies before they occur. When it comes to power reliability and safety, we're all in this together.

Here's what you can do

As Oregon’s climate changes, the more extreme conditions can increase the likelihood of storms and power outages . But if we’re all prepared, an outage can be a little easier to get through.
