Deschutes Fish Runs

Salmon and steelhead migration patterns and the peak timing

The Deschutes River is home to migrating salmon and steelhead virtually year-round. The chart below shows typical migration patterns and the peak timing of each run. For up-to-date numbers from our adult collection facility, see Monthly Fish Passage Reports.

Salmon and steelhead upstream of Pelton Dam

Construction of the Selective Water Withdrawal facility (SWW) marked the start of an ambitious effort to restore salmon and steelhead runs to the Deschutes River Basin. These runs had been cut off for decades, following dam construction.

Sockeye salmon were historically present in the Metolius River before construction of the Pelton Round Butte hydropower project. As part of PGE’s and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs’ fish reintroduction program, migrating juvenile sockeye are passed downstream of the dams to continue their journey to the Pacific Ocean, and returning adults are captured below the dams and released into Lake Billy Chinook.
