Juvenile salmon and trout migrating downstream are collected at a facility in the forebay of Lake Billy Chinook. These young fish are then transported past the dams and released below the Reregulating Dam—the last dam in the Pelton Round Butte complex—so they can continue their journey to the ocean.
Adult salmon and trout returning upstream are collected at a sorting facility also near the Reregulating Dam. If they originally came from the upper Deschutes Basin, they are released back into Lake Billy Chinook to continue their migration to spawning areas. Excess Round Butte Hatchery broodstock (Chinook and steelhead) can also be released into the upper basin if hatchery goals are met.
These monthly reports include counts of both juvenile and adult salmon and trout as they pass through the Pelton Round Butte fish collection facilities. Wild adult salmon and trout collected and released back into the lower Deschutes are also included. These monthly reports will be posted by the 15th of each month for the previous month.
Daily river levels and flows on the Deschutes are available from the U.S. Geological Survey.
