For Fourteen Years in A Row, Portland General Electric Customers Lead the Country in Choosing Renewable Power

Green Future program ranks No. 1 for voluntary enrollment

Sept. 20, 2023

PORTLAND, Ore. — With over 235,000 residential and commercial customers voluntarily enrolled in its Green Future℠ program, Portland General Electric and its customers are once again celebrating being the nation’s leaders in the adoption of renewable energy.

For the 14th year*, PGE has held the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s   No. 1 ranking for the largest participation of business and residential customers in a renewables program of any electric utility in the U.S. In addition, Green Future held its No. 1 ranking across two additional categories including participation rate and green power sales rate.

The Green Future program has been offered by PGE for 24 years with more than a quarter of all PGE customers enrolled in the program. Customers of all sizes are able to opt-in and support renewable energy as an innovative clean energy solution.

“At Portland General Electric, we reflect the priorities of the customers and communities we serve. For over a decade, PGE customers have prioritized clean energy through our Green Future program,“ said Maria Pope, president and CEO of PGE.

Through Green Future, customers support clean, new renewable energy equal to all or part of their energy use each month. In addition, the program gives back to communities by funding renewable energy projects through the PGE Renewable Development Fund (RDF).

The RDF offers competitive grant awards for applicants to deploy their own clean energy projects. 2023’s Renewable Development Fund also included – for the first time – funding for projects that incorporate energy storage. Grants are awarded through an open and competitive application process. To date, the fund has awarded $18 million to 87 local renewable energy projects resulting in 16.6 MW of renewable generation
