Green Future Choice and Green Future Block are Green-e Certified

When you enroll in Green Future Choice and Green Future Block, you purchase renewable energy certificates (RECs). A REC is created when a megawatt-hour of renewable energy is produced and delivered to the grid. RECs increase demand for, and drive development of, more renewable energy sources.

All RECs purchased on behalf of Green Future Choice and Green Future Block customers are verified and certified by Green-e Energy national standards, the nation’s leading independent consumer protection program for the retail sale of renewable energy.

What Does Green-e Energy Certification Guarantee?

When you see the Green-e Energy logo associated with an energy product it means:

• 100 percent of the supply for the product comes from renewable resources.

• The sources of energy supplying the product are independently verified by Green-e Energy, operated by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions.

• The renewable certificates are not sold more than once or claimed by more than one party.

• The participant company offering the product agrees to abide by the Green-e Energy Code of Conduct and Customer Disclosure Requirements governing its ethical treatment of customers.

Disclosure: Exception Granted for Oregon Emissions Reporting

Portland General Electric’s (PGE) Green-e® Energy certified green electricity programs Green Future Choice and Green Future Block include electricity from the Wheatridge Renewable Energy Facility, located in Morrow County, OR. Requirements imposed by administrative order by the Public Utility Commission of Oregon (OPUC) and by law under the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) have impacted the eligibility of some generation from this facility for Green-e® Energy certification. The Green-e® Energy Certification Program does not allow RECs generated after January 1, 2024, associated with electricity reported as emissions-free to the ODEQ to be used in these programs. Green Future Choice and Green Future Block customers may end participation in those programs at any time by contacting 800-542-8818.

Further Information

All electricity generated in 2024 by the Wheatridge Renewable Energy Facility is being reported by PGE to the ODEQ in connection with Oregon’s annual emissions reporting requirements. PGE is also required by the OPUC to include 2024 RECs from the Wheatridge Renewable Energy Facility in its Green Future Choice and Green Future Block programs. These RECs are anticipated to represent around 52% of Green Future Choice and Block’s supply in 2024.

Under Green-e® Energy certification rules, renewable generation attributes incorporated in a REC may not be simultaneously used to meet emissions reduction requirements and voluntary renewable electricity programs such as Green Future Choice and Green Future Block. Due to Green-e® Energy program requirements responding to the new regulatory context of the OPUC order and HB2021, PGE requested and was granted a one-time exception allowing 2024 Wheatridge generation in PGE’s two Green-e® Energy certified offerings. This exception was granted following a review and decision by the Green-e® Governance Board and only applies to the limited, short-term special case of renewable electricity certificates generated in 2024 by the Wheatridge Renewable Energy Facility. All other electricity generation and RECs that supply the Green Future Choice and Green Future Block programs may not be counted toward Oregon’s annual reporting requirements.
