Curbside EV charging is popping up in local neighborhoods

As more Oregonians make the switch to electric vehicles, we’re building the infrastructure to support EV drivers — right where they live. One of the newest, most efficient ways to do that? Installing EV chargers directly on existing utility poles in neighborhoods across our service area.

These pole-mounted chargers offer a simple, low-footprint solution for drivers who don’t have access to home charging, like renters or those who park on the street. It’s part of our broader effort to make EV charging more convenient, accessible and equitable for all.

Why curbside charging matters

Oregon has added more than 110,000 electric vehicles this year and is on track to exceed the state’s 2030 goals. To power them, we’ll need more public charging options in more places, especially in residential neighborhoods. Many drivers live in apartments, condos or older homes where installing a home charger just isn’t an option. Curbside chargers help fill that gap.

By using existing utility poles to mount EV chargers, we’re able to reduce the need for new infrastructure and keep installation costs down. That means we can bring charging to more areas, more quickly — without the need for major construction or added curb clutter.

Charging where you live

We’ve already installed pole-mounted chargers in several neighborhoods and more are in the works. You may start seeing them pop up near sidewalks and curbs in your neighborhood as the program expands. These Level 2 chargers are open to the public and work with most EV models. Drivers can easily pay using a mobile app. Each charger is clearly marked and conveniently located to serve drivers who use on-street parking.

How locations are selected

We’re working closely with city partners to identify areas where curbside charging can make the biggest impact, especially where there are high numbers of renters or homes without private driveways. Other considerations include curb access, safety for pedestrians and vehicles, and input from community members.

This kind of collaboration helps us ensure that the chargers are placed where they’re most needed and will be most used.

What’s driving the shift?

Electric vehicles produce no tailpipe emissions, which helps improve air quality and reduce noise in our neighborhoods. As more people make the switch, these benefits can add up — making our communities cleaner, quieter and more comfortable places to live.

Plus, driving electric can save you money. EVs typically cost less to fuel and maintain, especially when you take advantage of available rebates and charging programs.

Curbside charging makes it easier for people to go electric and every new EV on the road supports a healthier, more efficient energy future for Oregon.

Where we’re headed next

This program is just one piece of a larger effort to support EV adoption across Oregon. We’re working with cities and local governments to identify charging needs and install chargers where they’ll have the biggest impact. By bringing charging to the curb, we’re making it possible for more people — regardless of where they live — to be part of the clean transportation movement.

And it doesn’t stop there. Whether you’re charging at home, on the go or right outside your front door, we’re building a network that helps you keep moving.
