Electric vehicle charging essentials: easy, fast and rewarding

Charging your EV at home is easier than you think

“I haven’t been to a gas station since 2013. These days, I just pull into the garage, plug in my electric vehicle and head inside for the evening. Charging at home is easy, affordable and convenient — and it saves me time and money in the long run. Thanks to PGE’s EV charger rebates and programs, I even got help with the cost of installing a faster charger.” — Mike V., Beaverton customer

If you’re thinking about going electric, here’s what to know about charging at home and how to get started.

Start with Level 1 Charging

Most EVs and plug-in hybrids come with a Level 1 charger that plugs into a standard 120-volt wall outlet. This is the slowest charging option — adding around 3 to 5 miles of range per hour — but it’s a great place to start, especially if your daily commute is under 40 miles.

To charge with Level 1:

  • Plug the charger into a standard grounded wall outlet.

  • Connect the other end to your car.

  • Let it charge overnight while you sleep.

It doesn’t get more convenient than that and for many drivers, Level 1 charging covers most daily needs.

Want faster charging? Upgrade to Level 2

For quicker charging, a Level 2 charger uses a 240-volt outlet — like the kind used for an oven or dryer — to add 20 to 30 miles of range per hour. It’s a great option if you drive longer distances or want a full charge in just a few hours.

To install Level 2 charging at home:

  • Buy a Level 2 charger that’s compatible with your vehicle.

  • Hire a licensed electrician to install a 240V outlet or upgrade your panel, if needed.

  • Mount the charger and plug it in.

  • Or, let PGE+ handle it (see below).

With Level 2 charging, it’s easy to top off your battery before heading out on your next adventure.

Get rebates and savings with PGE

PGE’s Smart Charging program offers options for making at-home fast charging more affordable. Here’s a breakdown of the incentives:

  • Up to $300 back when you purchase and install a qualifying Level 2 charger — or up to $1,000 if you qualify for income-based assistance.

  • Up to $1,000 toward an electrical panel upgrade — or up to $5,000 if you qualify for income-based assistance.

  • A $50 rebate even if your charger isn’t on the qualified list.

The Smart Charging program rewards you for charging during times that help support the energy grid — like overnight or midday when demand is lower.

That’s six hours I get back to spend with my family or just stay dry indoors on a rainy Portland day.” — Mike V., Beaverton customer
