Pelton Park

Central Oregon's great escape

Swim, fish and camp in style

Pelton Park is a vacationer’s paradise where you can boat, camp, fish, view wildlife and relax. It’s near Madras on the shore of Lake Simtustus, the reservoir behind Pelton Dam.

  • 67 campsites, including yomes and cabins

  • Restrooms and showers

  • Concessions

  • A swim area (for campers only)

  • Boat launch, moorage and motorboat, kayak, paddle board rentals

  • Fishing docks and fish cleaning stations

  • Marina store and café

A yome is a cross between a rustic yurt and a dome, with canvas walls on a platform. Each yome is equipped with bunk beds and sleeps four; there is an outlet, but there are no heaters or air conditioning units.

We also have cabins — these are equipped with bunk beds, a small table and an air conditioning unit.

For both, just bring your cooking stove and supplies, toiletries and bedding.

The park store offers groceries, ice, fishing tackle, boat rental, fuel and a café.

The lake has a small water-skiing area, but most of the lake has a speed limit of 10 miles per hour making it ideal for fishing and paddling. There is a two-mile hiking trail along the ridgeline above the park, offering views of Lake Simtustus and the Cascades.

At the Pelton Wildlife Overlook, just north of Pelton Park, you can view ducks, geese, great blue herons, shorebirds, eagles and other raptors. Short trails lead to viewing platforms overlooking the Pelton Reregulating Reservoir.

Pelton Park is open for day use, including fishing, year-round.

Thinking ahead

We’re committed to keeping our parks safe, clean, sustainable and welcoming – but we need your help.

Before you go

  • Make a plan: Check for road closures, construction, fire bans, swimming restrictions or other conditions that may hamper your visit.

  • …and a plan B: Make a backup plan in case of crowds. Try visiting on weekdays or at off-peak times to beat the masses!

  • EV adventuring? While our parks do not have charging stations (yet!), check here for nearby locations PGE that do.

During your visit

  • Stop campfires from becoming wildfires! Keep campfires small, make sure your tent and anything that can burn is a safe distance from your fire, keep water nearby and never leave a fire unattended.

  • Keep it clear: Park only in designated areas. Do not double-park or block entrances.

  • Leave no trace: Help us protect these natural areas by staying on-trail, packing out your trash, and admiring wildlife from a distance.
