The start of a new year and a new decade is a good time to reflect on the past and think about what’s ahead at Portland General Electric.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change tells us that we have a decade to make significant progress to curb greenhouse gas emissions in our atmosphere. Our future must be powered by clean energy.
In 2019, we set out to cost-effectively accelerate Oregon’s transition to clean energy, modernize the grid and enable transportation electrification. As we look ahead, our ability to deliver a clean and resilient energy future is grounded in strategic public-, private and community-based partnerships as well as policy and regulatory changes. For example, Cap and Invest will be considered by the Oregon legislature over the next few weeks and we hope to see this important policy pass.
Our achievements in 2019 have set a solid foundation for progress in the year ahead. Highlights include:
We’re honored that for the last decade PGE customers have made our Renewable Energy Program the largest in the United States — with 25% of customers buying 100% green energy.
By 2022, Portland General Electric expects to have 50% clean energy to serve our customers.
We broke ground on the first-of-its-scale Wheatridge Renewable Energy Facility, which integrates wind and solar generation with battery storage in one location. Construction and operation of this facility will also bring nearly 500 clean energy jobs to eastern Oregon, in partnership with NextEra.
Just yesterday, we kicked off a partnership with Portland Public Schools for a first-of-its-kind open source climate change curriculum enabling K-12 school districts in Oregon and across the nation to collaborate and engage in a dialog with students.
In 2020, we’ll continue this momentum through partnerships with Panasonic on smart cities projects; TriMet to ensure efficiency and resiliency of their bus fleet; and Daimler on transportation electrification projects, among other collaborations.
Transportation continues to be the single biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Oregon. We expanded access to electricity as a transportation fuel, opening four new Electric Avenue vehicle charging hubs across the region, resulting in more than 2 million miles charged to-date. In 2020, we expect to open locations in Wilsonville, Salem and Beaverton. This infrastructure development will help to encourage the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in Oregon.
We are bringing the first electric school buses to Oregon which are cleaner, quieter and less costly to operate. In 2020, PGE will provide funding to purchase new buses, charging infrastructure, and technical support to four local school districts in the region.
The PGE Drive Change Fund last week awarded $2.25 million to 16 local community organizations, non-profits and businesses to increase access to electric transportation for all Oregonians.
We accomplished a great deal thanks to PGE customers, employees and partners. And it’s only the beginning. Together, we can continue to make Oregon a healthier and more sustainable place to live. Thank you.
