Avian plan protects birds around power poles and lines.
Birds find PGE utility lines and poles convenient places to perch, roost and nest, putting them in danger of electrocution. A collaborative effort with the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife Service and others has led to a plan designed to help.
New strategy helps keep birds safe
As part of the effort, PGE has identified high-risk areas and is retrofitting power lines, poles and other structures to reduce the risk of electrocution or collision. One step is the use of wire covers and anti-perching devices.
Other features of the plan include tracking and documenting all bird mortalities and at-risk nests, assessing existing lines and structures, and providing employee training on bird protection issues and procedures.
An ongoing commitment
PGE has committed up to $100,000 per year through 2010 for this plan to help reduce risks to birds.
